Since its humble early beginnings, the International Association of Lions Clubs has grown to include approximately 1.4 million community service minded men and women in more than 46,000 clubs located in more than 200 countries and geographical areas.
What began as the good intentions of a small group of civic minded men and women more than 90 years ago has evolved into a global force for good - a world class organization of men and women who recognize needs that go beyond their own, who work on behalf of others whom they may never see, speak with, or meet.
Membership in Lions Clubs International is by invitation only, from the members of a local Lions club. To learn more, or to be considered for membership, a candidate should contact a member of a local Lions club. If there is not a Lions Club nearby, a candidate should contact a Lion from another area to help them start a Lions Club in their own community. If anyone is unsure of who to contact, they can always call the Membership Department at Lions Clubs International at 630-571-5466, ext. 356 and someone there will be able to refer them to a local Lion for further assistance.

Lions club members are men and women around the world who strive to make a difference in their local community as well as around the world. Our volunteer efforts go well beyond the support of vision care, in addressing unmet health and education needs worldwide. As a Lions club member, you can:
•Make a difference everyday in your own local community.
•Be a part of a worldwide organization carrying out community and humanitarian projects at home and around the world.
•Grow personally and professionally by participating in our programs, community service projects and events.
•Have an impact on local and international humanitarian issues.
•Develop relationships with local and international community and business leaders.
•Have access to membership discounts and services.
Lions Clubs International is the world's largest (and best) service club organization with roughly 1.3 million members, in approximately 45,000 clubs, in over 200 countries and geographical areas.
Lions are men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes. Founded in 1917, the organization's motto is "We Serve."
Worldwide, Lions clubs are often recognized for our service to the blind and visually impaired. This service began when Helen Keller challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness" at the 1925 Lions Clubs International Convention. Today, Lions continue to extend our commitment to sight conservation through countless local efforts, as well as through our international SightFirst Programs. Lions also collect and recycle eyeglasses for distribution in developing countries year-round. In addition, Lions make a strong commitment to young people through our youth outreach programs. We also work to improve the environment, build homes for the disabled, support diabetes education, conduct hearing programs and, through the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), provide disaster relief around the world. In 1990, Lions established Campaign SightFirst, a global initiative to fight the major causes of preventable and reversible blindness. Our goal was to stamp out preventable blindness on a worldwide basis. This unprecedented program has joined Lions volunteers with blindness prevention experts and organizations and governments. To date, this program has:
•provided more than 5 million cataract surgeries
•built or expanded 207 eye hospitals
•supported more than 70 million treatments to prevent river blindness
•improved eye care in 89 countries around the world.
The cost of membership is very minimal. Liberty Lions currently pay annual dues of $75 per year. However, discounted dues are available for families.
One of the most important aspects of Lions, that sets us apart from most other organizations, is our call for unselfish service to others. Any money that we, as Lions, raise from the public goes back to the public. No Lion, or Lions Club, should ever benefit personally from funds that we raise from the public. That means that any money we raise from the public is to be used for community service projects. These monies cannot go into our own pockets, or be used for our clubs’ administrative expenses.
In addition to becoming a part of the largest community service organization in the world, your membership also includes a subscription to the Lion Magazine, a $1,000,000 General Liability Insurance Policy to protect your local club and each member during any and all Lions functions – as specified in the policy. You will also have access to support from approximately 1.3 million other members who will do their best to help you in any way they can. You will have the opportunity to make a difference in your own local community as well as in communities worldwide. Membership in Lions Clubs International will open many doors for you and your club. Not only will it allow you to better serve your local community and communities worldwide, it will also provide you with Leadership: training, skills, and opportunities.
